City to Build 3,620 New Absorption Wells

The Jakarta Industry and Energy Department allocates Rp 100 billion to build 3,620 new absorption wells in all Jakarta areas. Despite absorption well is only a simple technology, it is considered quite appropriate to overcome flooding in the capital city.

According to Head of Jakarta Industry and Energy Department, Haris Pindratno, besides minimizing flooding, absorption wells are also hoped able to suppress clean water crisis and hinder land subsidence. If clean water crisis not anticipated earlier, Jakarta will be lacking of clean water in 2030.
“We’re going to build 3,620 absorption wells this year, and 3,500 of them are shallow infiltration wells. The goal is to add clean water and slow down land subsidence,” he stated, Wednesday (10/1).
200 Absorption Wells to Be Built in West JakartaBesides Jakarta Provincial Government, building managements are also required to build absorption wells. This is in accordance to Jakarta Governor Regulation No. 20/ 2013 on Absorption Wells.
“In the building permit (IMB), new buildings are obligated to have absorption wells. Every year there could be 1,200 IMB applicants. We make sure they build absorption wells,” he asserted.
Moreover, the governor regulation also regulated that every soil cover must have good absorption well that have been standing or in the process of construction plan. As mentioned in Article 9, every building that has stood and has not had absorption well and/or absorption pond, the owner is obligated to build absorption well and/or absorption pond as required.
Meanwhile, Head of East Jakarta Industry and Energy Sub-Department, Tuti Kurniati, disclosed that 1,040 out of 3,500 shallow infiltration wells will be built in East Jakarta and spread in 10 sub-districts. As for absorption well, her department will only build it in 40 locations out of 120 locations planned.
“For East Jakarta, there will be 1,040 absorption wells built. They consist of 1,000 shallow infiltration wells and 40 deep absorption wells,” she informed.
