Urban Farming Becomes Popular in Thousand Islands

Urban farming is highly demanded by residents in Thousand Islands. One of the indicators is due to the increasing number of Women Farmers Group (KWT)

Most of them have applied urban farming with hydroponic method

Thousand Islands KPKP Sub-agency Head, Devi Riana Sumanthi stated, number of KWTs in 2019 was only six. But, until October 29, 2020, it has reached 25 KWTs.

"Most of them have applied urban farming with hydroponic method," she conveyed, Saturday (10/31).

According to her, hydroponic method is suitable to be developed in Thousand Islands because it doesn't need much water and not only using soil as planting medium.

"We continue to guide and assist them thus urban farming in this region can have a good results. Besides, the crops are not only for personal consumption, but it can also be sold and increase their income," she added.

From total 25 KWTs, 6 of them have became a pilot project and included in the Pekarangan Pangan Lestari (P2L) program. Those 6 KWTs are KWT Doa Ibu in Untung Jawa Island, KWT Seroja in Lancang Island, KWT HF Kampung Kelor in Tidung Island, KWT Hijau Lestari in Pramuka Island, KWT Bougenville in Harapan Island, and KWT Kelapa Hijau in Kelapa Island.

We hope with increasing number of urban farming groups, in the next two years, Thousand Islands can meet the needs of vegetables independently," she mentioned.
