Heavy Rain, Roads and Houses in West Jakarta Inundated

Due to shallow, the reservoir cannot accommodate more water, so the water overflowed onto the road

Heavy rain that hit the capital city and surrounding areas for more than two hours had caused some roads and residential in West Jakarta inundated, Wednesday (4/9). The inundations were allegedly happened because the water channels and rivers are strewn with mud and trash.

Flood Hits Houses in Kampung Pulo

Based on beritajakarta.com observations, 25-centimeter high water inundated Jalan Outer Ring Road, Cengkareng, on the lane Kapuk towards Cengkareng, or precisely from Satyagama Campus towards Cengkareng Sector Police Headquarter. As a result, traffic congestion cannot be avoided and forced motorists to slow down their vehicles.

Suryantoro (45), one of motorcycle-taxi drivers (ojek) based near the location, said that Jalan Outer Ring Road was inundated because water reservoir under JORR W1 toll road overflowed. “Water reservoir under JORR W1 toll road itself was built to accommodate water from toll road that channeled through modified pipes. Due to shallow, the reservoir cannot accommodate more water, so the water overflowed onto the road,” he uttered.

Besides on the lane towards Cengkareng, 30-centimeter high water also inundated the lane from Cengkareng towards Puri Kembangan for as long as 200 meters, or precisely along STT PLN and gas station (SPBU).

Meanwhile, the residential inundated was the one located at RW 03, Cengkareng Timur Urban Village, Cengkareng Sub-District. There water as high as 40 centimeters inundated more than 50 houses. “Our residential is known as flood-prone area since ten years ago. Every time rain pours, Apuran River overflows,” told Norin (38), a local.

According to Norin, Apuran River often overflows because the dredging work done there since 2013 is never completed from upstream to downstream. “Apuran River dredging is supposed to be carried out from upstream until downstream, instead of a mess like this. That’s why flood easily inundates our residential during rainy season,” she lamented.

Responding this matter, Head of West Jakarta Water Management Public Works Sub-Department, Pamudji, stated that at this time his party is repairing the water channels on both lanes of Jalan Outer Ring Road. “Besides repairing the water channels, we also do widening them,” he finished.
