This initiative is a crucial stepping stone as Jakarta closes in on its 5th-century milestone and its evolution into a global city.

Jakarta Food Security, Maritime and Agriculture (KPKP) Agency Head, Iwan Indriyanto noted that food security is the bedrock of any world-class metropolis.

"Jakarta government is throwing its weight behind strategic programs to ensure we are a resilient global city. Urban farming, in particular, has taken center stage in our roadmap for the future," he expressed, Wednesday (2/11).

He explained that since Jakarta is pressed for space, the city has to think outside the box by spearheading space-based farming. Despite the cramped quarters, this initiative is laser-focused on producing fresh horticulture, particularly vegetables.

"For a long time, Jakarta has been leaning heavily on its buffer zones for food. Through urban farming, we aim to make a real dent in our food supply needs, starting right in our own backyards," he explained.

He added that focusing on the household level passed the litmus test during the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, families were able to stand on their own two feet by growing their own vegetables for daily consumption.

He is calling on residents to tap into Jakarta’s untapped resources, turning abandoned land and 'sky-high' spaces like rooftops into green hubs. He also highlighted schools and offices as prime spots for this urban revolution.

"If we provide the necessary tools and technology, these spaces can bear fruit in more ways than one. By joining forces in a massive movement, we can ensure that Jakarta’s food security is on solid ground," Iwan closed.
