Jakarta Govt-City Council Step Up Coordination to Address Key Urban Challenges

Jakarta City Council (DPRD) Deputy Chair Wibi Andrino outlined three main issues the legislature is focusing on during the first year of Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung-Vice Governor Rano Karno's leadership: flooding, traffic congestion, and poverty.

Work in synergy to accelerate efforts to tackle flooding, congestion and poverty

Wibi said he had reviewed the Jakarta administration’s one-year performance report under Pramono and Rano, praising the completion of quick wins programs prioritized in their first year.

Pramono-Rano Increasing Focus on Strengthening Basic Services

"We heard directly from the governor that 97 percent of the quick wins program have been completed, with the remaining three percent still in progress. That is certainly an achievement worth appreciating," he shared on Sunday (2/22).

Despite the progress, the City Council believes several fundamental issues must remain joint priorities. Wibi stressed that the council and the Jakarta government will continue to work in synergy to accelerate efforts to tackle flooding, congestion and poverty in the capital.

On flooding, he underscored the need to strengthen control measures, including through the normalization of the Ciliwung River.

"We in the council will continue to support the executive's work so Jakarta can be increasingly free from flooding," he added.

To address congestion, Wibi said expanding public transportation is key. He backed strengthening Transjakarta services as well as integrating Transjabodetabek routes to reach surrounding buffer areas.

"We support expanding services to greater Jakarta's buffer zones so congestion can be significantly reduced," he pointed.

Meanwhile, in efforts to curb poverty, Wibi highlighted the continuation of the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) program as a crucial instrument to ensure education access for underprivileged residents.

"The KJP will be maintained with no cuts. God willing, it will continue to expand," he asserted.

According to him, the three issues must be addressed consistently throughout the five-year leadership of Governor Pramono and Vice Governor Rano.

Wibi said the City Council will also push the Jakarta government to strengthen the merit system and improve internal coordination among regional apparatus organizations (OPD) to ensure programs are implemented more harmoniously and effectively.

"We will continue working with the executive, both through our oversight function and by absorbing public aspirations during recess. Problems must be resolved on the ground, and we listen directly to residents' voices," he noted.

He voiced optimism that the leadership's vision for creating a more livable and well-managed Jakarta can be achieved by the end of its tenure.

On the other hand, Commission D Chair Yuke Yurike also praised the first-year achievements of Governor Pramono and Vice Governor Rano. However, she cautioned that significant work remains, particularly in addressing poverty disparities.

"Going forward, there is still a lot of homework, especially related to the fairly high poverty gap. This is our challenge, especially amid fiscal constraints," she said.

Yuke stressed that the council will ensure budget allocations are truly focused on public interests, particularly in handling flooding, congestion and poverty.

"We will make sure the budget is used as effectively as possible to meet the needs of Jakarta residents," she emphasized.
