Legislator Backs Bold Crackdown on Padel Courts in Jakarta’s Residential Zones

Jakarta City Hall Commission E Member, Farah Savira has come out in support of the Jakarta administration’s effort to relocate padel courts to commercial hubs.

She highlighted the urgency of a thorough permit investigation, as numerous courts have sprouted up in quiet housing zones.

"We are fully behind the enforcement of stricter operating hours. Because many courts are currently operating in high-density residential areas, a rigorous review of their documentation is long overdue," she noted, Wednesday (2/25).

She also urged the executive branch to coordinate closely with landowners who lease their property for padel courts to prevent such issues from recurring.

Farah pointed to several high-profile cases that have drawn public scrutiny, such as facilities in Pulomas and Haji Nawi, noting they are situated uncomfortably close to—or even directly inside—residential complexes.

“We need a total overhaul of how these permits are checked. In the future, we can't let businesses take over areas designed for living. Families deserve a home that is safe, quiet, and comfortable,” she added.

The crackdown casts a wider net, targeting not just padel courts but any sports facility disrupting residential tranquility.

Farah also suggested that owners should turn their controversial presence into a win-win situation by hiring from the local workforce. By doing so, these businesses can foster economic growth right in their own backyard.

“We are pushing for a 'hire local' policy. If you operate in a neighborhood, you should empower the people living there as part of your social footprint,” she asserted.

Pramono was previously cleaning up the city’s zoning rules. New padel courts are now banned from residential areas and must relocate to commercial zones.

• For courts already operating near homes:

• Strict Curfew: Must close by 8 PM.

• Soundproofing: Mandatory acoustic systems to prevent noise complaints.

• Legal Check: Courts without a Building Approval (PBG) face demolition.

He also protected the city’s lungs by banning padel facilities in Green Open Spaces (RTH). All new permits will now be tightly screened by the Youth and Sports Agency to ensure they do not disrupt public life.
