Padel Zoning: Balancing Business Growth and Neighborhood Tranquility in Jakarta

Jakarta City Council Commission C Member, August Hamonangan has welcomed the Jakarta government’s initiative to streamline the regulation of padel courts. He emphasized that such measures are vital to strike a healthy balance between economic growth and the comfort of local residents.

Padel is a fantastic sport with growing appeal

He noted that the surging public interest in padel presents a lucrative opportunity for the business sector and has the potential to boost regional revenue. However, the development must strictly adhere to urban planning, environmental standards, and social impacts on surrounding communities.

"Padel is a fantastic sport with growing appeal. However, its construction must be mindful of the environment, especially when located within residential zones," he stated, Wednesday (2/25).

Legislator Backs Bold Crackdown on Padel Courts in Jakarta’s Residential Zones

While the Online Single Submission (OSS) system streamlines licensing, it must be balanced with rigorous local oversight. Beyond administrative compliance, business owners are duty-bound to ensure their facilities align with designated land-use regulations.

Supporting the city’s stance, August backed the policy to direct padel court developments toward commercial zones, steering clear of residential clusters and Green Open Spaces (RTH). He believes this move is essential to head off potential public backlash.

Further, he urged operators to implement technical upgrades, such as soundproofing and organized parking management, to avoid disrupting neighbors. However, he warned that a formal evaluation remains necessary should significant disturbances occur on the ground.

In the future, he hopes the Jakarta government will be more discerning and meticulous in granting licenses, ensuring that the rise of modern sports hubs goes hand-in-hand with community welfare.

“Principally, we champion economic and sporting growth. However, the peace and tranquility of our residents must remain the top priority,” he concluded.
