City Council Emphasizes the Importance of Food Security Amidst Supply Dependence

Jakarta City Council Chairman, Khoirudin emphasized the importance of maintaining food security for the capital's residents, given that Jakarta lacks adequate agricultural land.

we must ensure that food supplies are truly secure

According to him, as a city that is completely dependent on supplies from other areas, food availability must be ensured to remain safe and stable.

"Jakarta has no rice paddies, no agricultural land. Therefore, we must ensure that food supplies are truly secure," he said.

Khoirudin added his party had asked the Jakarta Provincial Government to conduct sudden inspections at markets and Regional-Owned Enterprises (BUMD) that handle food to ensure stocks remain safe.

He acknowledged concerns about potential supply disruptions, given Jakarta's heavy dependence on regional suppliers. However, there is still no significant impact on food availability has been observed.

"There hasn't been any impact yet. But typically, during Eid al-Fitr, warehouse stock must be available. This is what we must ensure," he added.

He stated that the amount of rice circulating in the market and reserves in warehouses is currently considered sufficient to meet residents' needs for the next two to three months.

Moreover, the Jakarta City Council is also currently discussing a Draft Regional Regulation (Raperda) on Food System Implementation. This regulation is considered crucial for strengthening food security while protecting citizens' rights and obligations in meeting their food needs.

"We are currently discussing this Food Bylaw to ensure food security for Jakarta residents. It also regulates the rights and obligations that must be protected," he admitted.
