West Jakarta to Lease PT KAI Land for Temporary Landfills

The West Jakarta City administration is planning to use part of PT KAI's station land in Tambora and Taman Sari as temporary waste disposal sites.

We cannot allow waste to accumulate for too long

This move aims to address the challenges posed by the limited dumping capacity at the Bantar Gebang landfill.

West Jakarta Mayor, Iin Mutmainah admitted limiting the amount of waste sent to the Bantar Gebang landfill has caused waste to back up. Authorities fear this could lead to trash piling up in neighborhoods because of slower collection times.

"We understand that we cannot allow waste to accumulate for too long, as it will cause further problems," she stated, Friday (3/4).

It was acknowledged that currently, only around 25 percent of the 807,966 tons of annual waste in the area is being properly processed.

Because of this, the government plans to use parts of PT KAI's station areas in Tambora and Taman Sari for temporary waste sites.

"PT KAI agreed yesterday, and we will be following up with more detailed discussions," she explained.

West Jakarta Environmental Sub-agency Head, Hariyadi added that beyond securing land for temporary collection points, the city has also adjusted its waste delivery operations.

"We're maximizing the capacity of large trucks and phasing out small and medium ones for trips to Bantar Gebang," he added.

He added that this strategy reduces the number of trips from West Jakarta to the landfill by over 38 percent, dropping from 308 trucks to only 190 trucks per day.

"Because the rules limit the number of trips, we’ve come up with a strategy to pack the waste into larger trucks so we can cut down on the frequency of deliveries," he stated.
