It is not easily eroded by sea waves
Seribu Islands SDA Sub-agency Head, Mustajab stated that the installation of these gabions is a preventive measure to protect the outer side of the seawall, particularly during bad weather and high waves.
"These gabions serve to reinforce and protect the exterior of the embankment so that it is not easily eroded by sea waves," he expressed, Wednesday (5/20).
Government, Locals Work Together to Clean the Environment of Lancang IslandHe explained that the gabions are constructed using split stones secured within wire baskets. Each unit measures 1.5 meters in length and 50 centimeters in height.
"They (gabions) will be installed over a total length of 50 meters. As of now, 13 meters have been completed, with nine units of gabion wire already in place," he explained.
Mustajab added that the project began on May 11 and is targeted for completion by the end of this month. Every day, seven "Blue Squad" personnel are deployed to the site.
"We hope these gabions will minimize the impact of crashing waves while strengthening the coastal structure of Lancang Island for long-term durability," he hoped.
This work received appreciation from a resident of RW 03 Pari Island Village, Harmoko (53).
"We fully support this. Residents feel safer and more at ease, especially during high tides or extreme weather. Hopefully, the entire coastline of Lancang Island can eventually be well-protected," he concluded.
