Council Commission E Confident Sports Facilities Can Reduce Brawling

Jakarta City Council Commission E Chairman, M Subki believes that adding sports facilities such as boxing rings across various areas of Jakarta can help reduce brawling and crime rates among teenagers.

Jakarta is currently in need of waste management sites

According to him, the availability of sports facilities is an effective way to divert youth activities toward more positive and transparent endeavors.

"I don't recall the exact figures, but this can shift the focus of young people. Instead of hanging out in dark or obscure places with no clear purpose, they can gather in open spaces visible to the public," he expressed, Thursday (5/21).

He is optimistic that such steps can help minimize criminal acts and negative behavior among adolescents. He emphasized that young people need to be provided with space and facilities to channel their interests and energy.

"These are our children. We can't simply keep taking disciplinary action against them. It is better to channel their activities and facilitate their interests so that their focus on mischief can be transformed into positive things," he explained.

Further, he urged for an increase in social sports facilities that are easily accessible to the general public.

"Expensive facilities are fine for those who have the money. What is important is that social sports facilities for the community are expanded," he added.

On that occasion, Subki also touched upon the importance of optimizing land in Jakarta for the public interest, including waste management.

He suggested that large tracts of land, such as the golf course in the Kemayoran area, could be utilized for the construction of modern waste processing facilities, such as Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) plants.

"Jakarta is currently in need of waste management sites. If there is vast land like a golf course, why not utilize it for the broader public interest?" he concluded.

Notably, Governor Pramono Anung recently inaugurated a boxing ring and skate park under the Pasar Rebo Flyover in East Jakarta. These facilities were made as free creative spaces and a productive strategy to suppress the frequency of youth brawls in the area.

The program, which involves professional communities, is deemed highly effective. East Jakarta Mayor, Munjirin, noted that the number of brawls in his region dropped from 132 incidents in 2025 to 55 incidents in 2026. This successful utilization of open space is now planned to serve as a pilot project for other regions.
