Jakarta Govt and City Council Boost Budget for Public Welfare

Jakarta Council (DPRD) Chairman Suhud Alynudin reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the positive achievements that have been made while strengthening synergy with the Jakarta Provincial Government in advancing development and improving public welfare.

to ensure there are no budget cuts or reductions affecting public welfare programs

Suhud said the Jakarta DPRD will optimize its three core functions: regional lawmaking, oversight, and budgeting.

In the legislative sphere, the council will push for the enactment of regional regulations that can accelerate development while addressing the needs of Jakarta residents.

“A number of the regional regulations that have been produced are greatly needed by Jakarta residents and by the executive branch in carrying out its functions and implementing development programs in Jakarta,” he stated on Tuesday (6/9).

In terms of oversight, the Jakarta Council will continue monitoring policies implemented by the city administration. Suhud said input and criticism from council members are intended to support efforts to improve public services and development.

“That is the collaboration we are referring to. It means the council is carrying out its duties and functions,” Suhud added.

From the budgeting perspective, Suhud emphasized that programs directly related to public welfare will remain a priority. Initiatives such as the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP), the Jakarta Excellent Student Card (KJMU), food subsidies, and flood control programs must continue despite the city's ongoing budget-efficiency measures.

According to him, budget cuts should not affect programs that directly impact residents' needs and welfare.

“We want to ensure there are no budget cuts or reductions affecting public welfare programs,” he stressed.

Suhud expressed optimism that synergy between DPRD and the Jakarta Provincial Government will continue to strengthen. He said good communication with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung serves as an important foundation for delivering feedback and evaluating development programs.

He also encouraged the provincial administration to develop creative financing schemes so that Jakarta does not rely solely on conventional funding sources. According to Suhud, there is still considerable potential to expand funding through cooperation with various stakeholders.

He hopes such efforts will strengthen the city's fiscal capacity, allowing development programs to continue running optimally without reducing initiatives that address residents' basic needs.

“There is still significant funding potential that can be developed through cooperation with various parties. This needs to be encouraged so it can become a new source of revenue for Jakarta,” he noted.
