Restaurants Serving Pet Meat Receive Warning Letters

The joint officers of West Jakarta Satpol PP, Food Security, Maritime and Agriculture Sub-agency, Health Sub-agency, and PTSP, Wednesday (6/17), issued a warning letter to the owner of a restaurant on Jalan Pangrango, RT 11/10, Cengkareng Timur Urban Village, who was found to be selling meat from animals that transmit rabies (HPR).

Head Section of Animal Husbandry and Health for the West Jakarta KPKP Sub-agency, Tanti, explained this action follows up on Jakarta Governor Regulation number 36/2025 which prohibits the sale and purchase of Rabies-Transmitting Animals (HPR) for food purposes in the form of cooked or raw meat.

"From this monitoring, we discovered dog meat being processed into soup. We provided guidance and education to the restaurant owner regarding the fact that dogs transmit rabies, a zoonotic disease that affects humans," she said.

Meanwhile, the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) issued a warning letter to the owner. If the owner persists in their behavior and is found serving dog meat again, the restaurant could face closure.

"The Public Order Agency has issued a warning letter. Although this is the first time, we hope that no more food businesses will violate the law," she added.

The restaurant's owner, Tangkas Hutabarat, admitted that he did serve dog meat in soup. However, he emphasized that the dish was ordered by a customer and was not sold to the public.

Tangkas admitted that his customer ordered the dog meat soup for his child who was being treated in hospital.

"I'm not hiding it, there's a soup pot. If it weren't for customer requests and medical reasons, I wouldn't have made this," he admitted.
