Sort It at Home! Rano Karno’s Mission to Save Jakarta

Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno urged residents to start sorting their waste right from their homes during the Jakarta Colorful Carnival at Car Free Day on Jalan MH Thamrin, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Sunday (6/28).

Starting this August, Bantar Gebang is no longer allowed to use the open dumping system

Rano emphasized that waste sorting at the source is now mandatory, as the Bantar Gebang Landfill will ban 'open dumping' starting this August, accepting only residual waste.

"Starting this August, Bantar Gebang is no longer allowed to use the open dumping system. Every bit of waste we send must be residue only," he expressed.

City Council Monitors Waste Sorting Implementation

Rano noted that local authorities have been aggressively campaigning and educating residents on source-based waste management.

He also revealed that the Jakarta government is currently developing high-tech Intermediate Treatment Facilities (ITF) in several locations, including Sunter, North Jakarta.

"Waste processing must now happen at the source. The core message is to protect Jakarta—that is our top priority," he emphasized.
