Jakarta Upgrades Sidewalks to Encourage Active Lifestyles

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung responded to Time Out's survey, which placed Jakarta outside the world's 20 most pedestrian-friendly cities in 2026.

Making it more comfortable for residents to walk and exercise

He said the Jakarta Provincial Government will continue improving the city's pedestrian infrastructure to encourage residents to walk more and adopt healthier lifestyles.

"That's why we're improving sidewalks as part of our Car Free Day initiative. And as you can see, quality pedestrian infrastructure is no longer concentrated only in the Sudirman-Thamrin and Kuningan areas," Pramono said on Thursday (16/7).

He explained that the city continues to expand and better connect pedestrian walkways across Jakarta, making it more comfortable for residents to walk and exercise.

"I truly hope Jakarta residents won't be mager (too lazy to get moving), but instead embrace a healthier lifestyle. That's why we've introduced Car Free Day in every municipality and continue adding supporting facilities," he noted.

Pramono also encouraged residents to make walking, jogging, and regular exercise part of their daily routine, saying these habits should be embraced collectively to improve public health across the city.

"Personally, since I regularly jog, run, and walk, I believe these are activities we should all do together to make Jakarta's residents healthier," he said.
