Marking 81 Years of Indonesian Independence, Legislator Calls on Residents to Build Jakarta

Yuke Yurike, Chairwoman of Commission D of the Jakarta City Council, calls on the public to use the commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia's independence as a moment to honor the struggles of their predecessors and to strengthen the spirit of upholding that independence.

Freedom of self-expression

According to Yuke, Indonesia's independence achieved through a long and arduous struggle must be upheld. Independence, she noted, should not be interpreted merely in symbolic terms but also realized through freedom of opinion and expression.

"Preserving independence is no easy task. We must ensure that Indonesia, now 81 years independent, becomes truly free across all fronts, including freedom of opinion and freedom of self-expression," she said.

She also emphasized the importance of strengthening the role of women in Indonesia's development. Yuke hopes that Indonesian women will continue to contribute to the nation's progress through various ideas and achievements.

"Especially regarding women, we hope that as the Republic of Indonesia marks its 81st year, Indonesian women will make increasingly significant contributions and undertake every possible endeavor for our beloved Indonesia," she added.

Yuke hopes that Indonesia will not only be able to sustain its existence for 81 years but also continue to stand strong and flourish well into the future. She also calls upon the residents of Jakarta to give meaning to independence by embracing the spirit of safeguarding and developing the capital city.

"We must be even more enthusiastic about keeping Jakarta advancing, cleaner, and more modern, especially as we look forward to the city's five-hundredth anniversary," she stated.

Yuke believes that Jakarta holds a significant position as one of the faces of Indonesia. Therefore, the unity and spirit of mutual cooperation among Jakarta's residents can have a positive impact on other regions across the country.

"Jakarta is a microcosm of Indonesia. If Jakarta fares well—with its residents united and working hand in hand—then, God willing, this will inspire other regions to become more united and solid as well," she emphasized.
