Transforming Kramat Jati, Hundreds of Vendors Relocated to Designated Trade Hubs

The Jakarta government has initiated a comprehensive spatial revitalization of hundreds of vendors in the Kramat Jati area, East Jakarta.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the revitalization aims to ensure the safety and security of trading activities while simultaneously restoring the intended functions of public roads and open spaces.

Pramono made these remarks following an inspection of the Kramat Jati Fish Market’s revitalization at its designated government-managed site (Lokbin) in East Jakarta on Tuesday night (9/1).

He explained that relocation spots had been secured for a total of 614 vendors. This figure included 193 fish vendors relocated to the Kramat Jati Lokbin, 331 vendors moved to Sector 7 of the Kramat Jati Market, 45 cake vendors to Cililitan Lokbin, and other 45 vendors placed across various other markets managed by the state-owned market operator, Pasar Jaya.

To support these vendors during the transition period, the Jakarta government had waived all levy fees for the next six months. Following this grace period, vendors would be required to pay a monthly levy by Rp 180,000.

"For this specific site, the Kramat Jati Lokbin, we're providing a six-month waiver on all levies and contributions for the vendors," he explained.

He hoped that the revitalization would result in a more orderly and aesthetically pleasing Kramat Jati. Prior to this relocation, street vending in the area had been a fixture of the district since approximately the 1970s.

Then the revitalization process was a formidable task, as it addressed a situation that had been entrenched for over 50 years. Consequently, he commended the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the vendors and community leaders, for their pivotal roles in the initiative.

"This achievement certainly wouldn't have been possible without the full cooperation of the vendors and the community figures who facilitated the coordination of this transition," he continued.

To ensure the long-term economic viability of the vendors, the Jakarta government is currently finalizing a strategy to establish a traders' cooperative. This revitalization is envisioned to serve as a key supplier, providing fish to hospitals managed by the provincial government.

"Earlier, in our discussions with the Mayor and the Head of the Integrated Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, and SMEs Agency, an initiative to form a cooperative was put forward," he added.

Aside that, the Jakarta government is concurrently preparing supplementary sites to accommodate all remaining fish vendors in the Kramat Jati area. Pramono expressed his optimism that these additional venues could be operationalized expeditiously to support the vendors' commercial activities.

"We hope these preparations can be completed within a short timeframe. Once achieved, the current shortage of designated spaces for the vendors will be promptly and effectively resolved," he concluded.

To ensure public awareness of these newly designated sites, the Jakarta government would play an active role in disseminating information to the wider community.

Meanwhile, Kramat Jati Dawn Market Vendors Coordinator, Muhtarom, urged all traders operating in the sub-district to relocate to the government-managed facilities provided by the administration.

"I've called upon the street vendors—specifically those active in the dawn market—to transition into the designated Lokbin sites," he said.

Notably, this strategic realignment of 614 vendors was executed with remarkable efficiency over a single week, spanning from August 24 to 31, 2026.

The initiative was spearheaded to reclaim the functional integrity of public thoroughfares and communal spaces, while simultaneously fostering a commercial ecosystem that is inherently more disciplined, secure, and conducive for all stakeholders.
