Jakarta Pushed to Become National Coffee Industry Hub

Jakarta aims to become the central node of the Indonesian coffee ecosystem, driven by the nation's rich coffee diversity and the capital's booming downstream sector.

We're fully dedicated to pushing Jakarta as the primary hub for Indonesia's coffee industry

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung emphasized this commitment while officiating the 2026 Indonesia Coffee Expo (ICX) at the Jakarta International Convention Center on Friday (9/4).

"We're fully dedicated to pushing Jakarta as the primary hub for Indonesia's coffee industry," Pramono stated, via an official government press release.

Jakarta Strengthens Creative Economy Through Coffee Industry

He believes that the rich diversity of Indonesian coffee varieties will have a significant impact on regional economic growth.

Meanwhile, the growth of the downstream coffee industry in Jakarta is also bolstered by the massive expansion of coffee shops, cafes, and restaurants, as well as shifts in public consumption patterns. Currently, there are nearly 193,000 business actors operating in this sector.

“Today, coffee enthusiasts—particularly the younger generation—have made a new culture centered around the 'grab-and-go' concept amidst their activities in public spaces and community circles,” he added.

Pramono noted that the coffee sector rests on a firm foundation, bolstered by Jakarta’s stable economy. The capital accounts for 16.32 percent of the national GDP while maintaining a steady 2.5 percent inflation rate. This economic strength, combined with the unique profiles of regional beans like Gayo, Luwak, and Toraja, provides Indonesia with a competitive edge globally.

"When I met with the Tanzanian delegation, I sampled their coffee and noticed they rely on just one variety. It is a world away from our local offerings, which boast an extraordinary range of flavors and rich characters," he explained.

With more than 120 exhibition booths present at the event, he expressed optimism that the national coffee industry possesses a superior competitive edge on the international stage. On this occasion, the Jakarta government opened opportunities to support the hosting of international-scale coffee industry agendas in Jakarta.

He encouraged the Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia (SCAI) to bring the prestigious "World of Coffee" event back to Jakarta before 2030.

“If SCAI can once again host the grand World of Coffee event in Jakarta before 2030—specifically in May 2029—the Jakarta government is prepared to provide full support, including policy assistance and other facilitations,” he added.

ICX Jakarta 2026 serves as a business networking hub and a showcase for the evolution of brands and talent within the coffee industry, following its previous editions in Surabaya and Medan. The exhibition features at least 75 curated brands, regional-level barista competitions, and various discussion sessions with industry stakeholders.

SCAI General Chairman Daryanto Witarsa noted that the Indonesia Coffee Expo is geared toward becoming a central hub for the industry, bridging the gap between upstream and downstream sectors and fostering global market connections.

“With ICX, we want to build on this great momentum by creating a homegrown platform that brings together all stakeholders in the coffee ecosystem, including farmers, baristas, processors, and business owners, alongside international buyers in Jakarta,” he added.
