30 Large Biopores for Organic Waste Made in Sunter Agung

The Sunter Agung Urban Village in Tanjung Priok District, North Jakarta, has installed 30 large biopore holes in a vacant lot near the BMW Park Pump House on Jalan Danau Sunter Barat. This facility is being used to reduce organic waste directly at its source.

Organic waste can be managed independently

Head of the Economic and Development Section of Sunter Agung Urban Village, Citra Glori Lebang, said that the making of large biopores is one of the efforts to handle organic waste while encouraging people to get used to sorting their waste from home.

"The goal is to ensure that household organic waste can be managed independently at the urban village level, preventing it from piling up and reducing the burden on final disposal," she said, Monday (9/14).

Citra explained that the 30 large biopores were made using plastic barrels planted in a 300-square-meter plot. Organic waste collected from residents' homes was then placed into the barrels to speed up the decomposition process.

Previously, the urban village had also distributed organic waste bins or collection points (drop points) to a number of RTs in each RW.

"Organic waste collection from residential areas is scheduled regularly by PPSU personnel. Every Monday for odd-numbered neighborhood units (RW) and Thursday for even-numbered neighborhood units (RW)," she explained.

In addition to producing compost, organic waste processing also has the potential to produce maggots or black soldier fly (BSF) larvae which can be used as alternative feed for poultry, such as chickens and ducks.

"We hope that residents in all RTs will be more active and accustomed to sorting waste from home," she hoped.

Meanwhile, Head of the Tanjung Priok District Environmental Implementation Unit, Amir, supported organic waste processing through large biopores. His rank has provided 30 240-liter barrels for use as waste processing facilities.

"One barrel has a capacity of 240 liters, so these 30 barrels can hold around 7,200 liters or kilograms of waste," he stated.

Amir added that changing people's habits regarding waste management requires a process and cannot be achieved instantly. Therefore, his team continues to monitor, evaluate, and provide assistance to residents.

"We continue to work together to monitor and provide assistance so that the target of reducing waste disposed of at the Bantar Gebang landfill by 50 percent can be achieved.
