JFW 2026 Press Conference, Rano Optimistic Realizing Jakarta as a Cinema City

Jakarta Vice Governor, Rano Karno, expressed his confidence in realizing Jakarta as a Cinema City within the five years of his leadership with Governor Pramono Anung.

Rano expressed this optimism while attending the Jakarta Film Week (JFW) 2026 press conference at CGV Grand Indonesia, Jalan MH Thamrin, Kebon Melati, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (9/23).

Rano Encourages Residents to Switch to Public Transportation

Rano said that the development of JFW is also in line with his dream of making Jakarta a cinema city.

"Even though it is not easy, I am sure this can be realized," he said.

As a stage in the realization of the city of cinema, Rano admitted that he had ordered that some of the 148 markets in Jakarta be equipped with Jaksinema.

"Currently, the Jaksinema cinema studio is only in the Pasar Rumput Flats," he added.

Rano also hopes that JFW can support Jakarta, which will celebrate its 500th anniversary in 2027. As in previous years, Rano admitted his team has planned various activities to enliven the event in Jakarta from January 2027 to January 2028.

He is optimistic that the various planned activities will have a fiscal impact on Jakarta's economy. While the previous series of events generated a fiscal impact of up to Rp 68 trillion, Rano believes the upcoming event will boost the fiscal sector even further.

"I've created a calendar of activities from January next year to January 2028, and I estimate Jakarta's fiscal increase could be over 300 trillion rupiah. So, that's our target," he admitted.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Film Week Festival Director Rina Damayanti explained that throughout 2026, her team received more than 1,200 films from 82 countries and 180 proposals.

"As in previous years, JFW has many competitions in the festival program including the Global Feature Award, Direction Award, Global Short Award and Animation Award," she explained.

In addition to competition programs, JFW also has non-competition programs including the Jakarta Film Fund, JFW 360, Global Feature and also collaboration programs.

The collaborative program with the Embassy of Italy, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, and Cinecittà, the Embassy of the Netherlands and Erasmus Huis with the Dutch Cinema program, the Hong Kong Gala Presentation Made in Hong Kong in collaboration with the Asian Film Awards Academy, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Jakarta, the Embassy of France and IFI Jakarta will bring Nextstep Studio and screenings of several selections of French films.

"It will also collaborate with the Jakarta Film Commission to present the Hong Kong Film Exhibition with Jakarta Pak, at fX Mall and will run throughout Jakarta Film Week," she stated.
