Cipinang Melayu Residents Cultivate Maggot to Tackle Waste Issues

Residents living in Cipinang Melayu Urban Village, Makasar Sub-district, East Jakarta are expanding community-based waste management through maggot cultivation.

Cipinang Melayu Urban Village Head Arroyantoro stated that around 400 to 500 kilograms of organic waste are utilized daily as maggot feed.

“Maggot cultivation facilities are currently operating in RW 11, 05, 12, 01, and 10," he expressed, Wednesday (9/30)

He went on to say that organic waste is first fermented in large drums for two to three days.

“This process speeds up decomposition and reduces odor before the waste becomes maggot feed," he continued.

According to him, mature maggots are partially sold, while others are kept to mature and lay new eggs.

“Sales occur at least every three days, totaling 40 to 50 kilograms. Retail price is Rp 10,000 per kg and non-retail is Rp 7,000 per kg," he continued.

He noted that while PPSU personnel currently manage the RW 11 maggot facility, residents will soon take a direct role in its operation.

“We'll train residents in maggot cultivation so they can apply these skills both at the TPS and in their own neighborhoods," he added.

He added that source-based waste management is also driven by optimizing waste banks and jumbo biopores.

“Hope these programs foster a culture of sorting waste at home and turn waste into economic value," he hoped.

Meanwhile, a local resident Rudi expressed strong support for the waste management efforts, including maggot cultivation.

“Solving waste issues requires community involvement. After all, certain waste can be processed into valuable resources that boost our income," he stated.
