The urban renewal project will target several crowded residential areas, including Kebon Melati, Kebon Kacang, and Kampung Bali.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated the redevelopment is urgently needed after nearly 60 years without proper handling, pledging that no residents will be evicted in the process.
Tanah Abang Drainage Normalization Targets Late-October Finish"Today's City Hall plenary meeting decided on major improvements for Tanah Abang, Kebon Melati, Kebon Kacang, and Kampung Bali. Despite being located near the Palace, City Hall, and Bundaran HI, they are still among our most impoverished areas," he expressed, at Blok M Hall, South Jakarta, Wednesday (10/7).
He hoped that the initiative will become a model for future housing improvements in Jakarta.
"The key principle is area improvement without forced evictions. We're fixing the neighborhood, and this will be a role model for Jakarta moving forward," he explained.
The redevelopment effort involves collaboration between Jakarta Water Resources Agency (SDA) and Social Agency. According to Pramono, funding has been secured through a mix of the City Budget (APBD) and creative financing mechanisms, such as private sector CSR funds and building floor ratio (KLB) contributions.
He hoped that a total restructuring of Tanah Abang would significantly improve the capital’s image.
"I am confident that if we see these initiatives through to the finish line, Jakarta’s cityscape will steadily improve," he stressed.
