In a move to modernize urban spaces without displacing residents, Jakarta is teaming up with South Korea to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) for a 2.3-square-kilometer neighborhood overhaul in Central Jakarta's Tanah Abang area.
There is no harm in Indonesia partnering with anyone
The initiative targets the Kampung Bali, Kebon Melati, and Kebon Kacang sub-districts. Leveraging AI, authorities plan to spearhead community design, map out revitalization strategies, and bolster an enhanced CCTV security infrastructure targeted for completion by 2028.
Jakarta Legislative Council Commission D Member Ida Mahmudah backed the initiative, viewing the technology as a vital tool to uplift local living standards.
Tanah Abang Neighborhood Revamp Goes High-tech with AI"With AI developing so rapidly right now, I believe there is no harm in Indonesia partnering with anyone, provided the ultimate goal is to empower local regions and our people," she expressed, Friday (10/9).
She also stressed the importance of engaging affected communities throughout the overhaul. According to her, a displacement-free concept must be backed by temporary relocation plans should residents need to leave their homes temporarily.
"Going displacement-free is possible, but the regional administration or housing office needs to set up temporary housing until the neighborhood is fully organized," she explained.
She went on to say that AI can enhance the efficiency and precision of urban renewal. Even so, she stressed that engaging in open communication with residents is key to keeping the community informed and prepared.
"Local authorities have an obligation to communicate clearly with residents so they are not caught by surprise and can adequately prepare," she continued.
She hoped that upgrading high-density areas will improve local housing quality, noting that similar revitalization is required in crowded neighborhoods across North, East, South, and West Jakarta.
"Each region has dense communities that deserve attention," she stated.
