Jakarta Readies 105,000 Mangrove Seedlings for Seribu Islands Restoration

The Seribu Islands Water Resources Sub-agency is gearing up to plant 105,000 mangrove seedlings across five islands this November 2026. The green effort is designed to mitigate shoreline erosion, safeguard coastal communities, and conserve local marine life.

We call on residents to care for the mangroves to prevent erosion

Ahead of the effort, the sub-agency conducted socialization meetings in Panggang and Kelapa islands urban villages.

Seribu Islands Coastal Protection and Development Section Head Wahyu Maulana stated the collaboration includes building breakwaters, seawalls, and domestic wastewater systems (SPALD) to protect water quality and marine health.

“Mangrove planting is a natural way to reduce erosion, protect islands, and keep coastal ecosystems healthy,” he expressed, Monday (10/26).

He detailed that the restoration project will target Harapan Island, Kelapa Island, Kelapa Dua Island, Panggang Island, and Pramuka Island, with each receiving around 21,000 seedlings.

“We're engaging various community stakeholders to ensure locals play a direct role in planting as well as long-term conservation,” he explained.

He added that mangroves protect shorelines by trapping sediment and reducing wave force to minimize erosion.

Additionally, mangroves provide habitats for fish, shrimp, and crabs, while storing carbon to balance the ecosystem.

“We hope this preserves coastal areas, supports fish stocks, and brings lasting benefits to islanders,” he hoped.

To ensure program success, three Rural Forestry Extension Centers (SPKPs) have been deployed for supervision and support.

“The groups include Bintang Laut SPKP, Elang Bondol SPKP, and Samo Samo SPKP, covering all target islands,” Wahyu added.

Wahyu added that post-planting monitoring and periodic evaluations will be conducted to keep track of seedling health and replace any trees that fail to take root.

“Routine checks will help us hit our target numbers and secure optimal growth so that the community reaps the full long-term benefits,” he added.

Meanwhile, Panggang Island Urban Village Head Jamaluddin welcomed the planting plan, noting public involvement is key to seedling survival.

He hoped the program builds shared awareness for island environmental protection.

“We call on residents to care for the mangroves to prevent erosion and support local fishermen’s livelihoods,” he stated.
