The North Jakarta Public Works Sub-agency relocated 5.6 kilometers of aerial cables along five roads in Tanjung Priok District to the Integrated Utility Network Facility (SJUT). The restructuring aims to reduce cable clutter and improve the safety and aesthetics of the area.
Globally competitive Jakarta
The five road sections targeted for improvement include Jalan Danau Sunter Utara, Jalan Danau Sunter Barat, Jalan Danau Agung 2, Jalan Agung Tengah 4, and Jalan Agung Perkasa 8. Based on observations at the location, previously a number of cables were seen wrapped around and piled up on the supporting poles.
West Jakarta Relocates 7.6 Kilometers of Overhead Cables Across Nine RoadsThe Governor's Special Staff for Development and Urban Planning, Nirwono Joga, said that the Monday Cable program is a form of commitment from the Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, to organize the utility network, especially aerial cables, so that all of them can be moved underground.
"This arrangement aims to create a safe, orderly, comfortable, and globally competitive Jakarta. We aim to have all aerial cables in Jakarta lowered within five years, but we are continuously pushing for faster implementation," he said, Monday (11/2).
Nirwono explained that the current arrangement focuses on telecommunications cables belonging to operators affiliated with the Association of Telecommunications Network Providers (Apjatel). Meanwhile, the electricity cables belonging to PT PLN cannot be cut yet due to the need for technical coordination and different underground network specifications.
"To strengthen the legal basis for the implementation of this program, the Jakarta Provincial Government is currently finalizing three Governor's Regulations (Pergub), namely the Pergub on the SJUT Master Plan, the Pergub on Regional Utility Retributions, and the Pergub on the Obligations of Utility Network Providers," he explained.
According to him, cable arrangement is carried out through several mechanisms, starting from the use of SJUT, independent relocation by operators, cutting of inactive cables, to tying and raising cables that are still operational while waiting for the relocation process.
"The implementation of this program also refers to the 5K principles, namely resident safety, pedestrian comfort, smooth traffic flow, city beauty, and Jakarta's readiness as a global city," he added.
Head of Jakarta Public Works Agency, Darwin Ali stated the aerial cable arrangement and cutting activities involved 18 telecommunications network operators together with the North Jakarta Public Works Sub-agency.
"The relocation of 5,600 meters of network has been completed. The next phase is the dismantling of all old cables and poles in the sector, which is targeted for completion by December 2026," he stated.
Darwin continued that the utility network development will be gradually expanded to several other locations. One of the next targeted roads is Jalan Kramat Jaya Raya in Koja District.
The Head of City Utilities Infrastructure and Facilities Maintenance Subgroup of the Jakarta Public Works Agency, Ahmad Sapii, confirmed that the cable cutting will not disrupt internet services or community activities.
"All active cables have been moved underground. The cables that were cut were used or no longer functional. The restructuring also included the removal of old support poles," he said.
He assured that ongoing monitoring will be conducted to prevent illegal or non-compliant cable installation. If violations are found, enforcement will be implemented through coordination with relevant agencies and associations.
