Trawling Boat Harms Jakarta Fisherman

The existence of trawl boats at Jakarta bay harms small fishermen of Jakarta coast and damages under sea ecosystem.

We had caught 6 boats in July 2013 and 3 boats in September

Trawl boats have been operating since 1980. During their operation, they also net small fishes besides big fish too. It affects fish population much. About 4,000 small fishermen in North Jakarta have no fishes left

North Jakarta Head Sub-dept. of Husbandry, Fishery and Maritime (P2K), Sri Haryanti, said that Jakarta Vice Governor Basuki T Purnama had instructed to ban trawl boats operation at Jakarta Bay.

"We had caught 6 boats in July 2013 and 3 boats in September. A moment after that, owner's representative came and asked for coaching to us," she said, Friday (5/9).

Boat owner and P2K sub-dept. have agreed to change boat technology lately on June 1. The agreement was done during a continuation meeting. Sri has also coordinated with harbormasters along Jakarta coast to stop giving Port Clearance Certificate for trawl boats.

"We give guidance to them to change their way netting fishes. There will be a socialization before June 1," Sri asserted.
