Residents Cleaning Up Cipinang River

Feeling bored of their region often flooded due to overflowing Cipinang River, hundreds of residents of Halim Perdanakusuma, Makasar, East Jakarta, did a community service cleaning up garbage and mud in that river, Sunday (6/22).

Residents assisted by East Jakarta Cleanliness Sub-Department Officers and members of Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Military lift garbage and mud at the rivier that has 1.5 km long, especially in area RW 05 and 07 Halim Perdanakusuma.

This clean-up action led by Head of Halim Perdanakusuma Urban Village, Yuswil Rashid. He said, that the action is done because people often complain their settlements are often flooded. During heavy rain, RW 05 and 07 often inundated as high as 50-70 centimeters.

"Since often flooded, our citizens expect the city government to immediately normalize Cipinang River. Every year, there are 15 RTs in RW 05, 07, and 08 which often flooded," said Rashid.

Currently, the City Public Works Department is actually normalizing Cipinang River. However, the project is reaching Makasar Urban Village meanwhile Halim has not been touched at all. Residents are worry that the normalization is not done evenly throughout the river though Halim Perdanakusuma is in low-lying areas that often flooded.

Suratno (50), said that more than 20 years the area prone to flood. "We hope that the city government does Cipinang River normalization totally, from the upstream to downstream, so residents in the riverbank is not continuously flooded," hoped Suratno.
