City Decorates Tunnel on Jalan Kendal to Commemorate 25 Years Jakarta-Berlin Sister City Cooperation

Hopefully this mural artwork can be appreciated by all people

Jakarta Provincial Government and MRT Jakarta cooperates with Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ) and iMural to decorate tunnel walls with mural painting on Jalan Kendal, South Jakarta. Mural painting will be done from July 23 to August 5, 2019. It will be painted on walls as high as 3.7 meters with length ± 32 meters.

Murals are painted with theme of 'Friendship Mural' to commemorate 25 years sister city cooperation between Jakarta and Berlin. This project involves the famous mural artist as well as designer and architect from Berlin, Snyder, and famous mural artist from Jakarta, Darbots. Darbots is known as the mural artist who paints most of Jakarta's corners.

Batik Mural Made for Beautifulness of Kebon Baru Area

Tunnel on Jalan Kendal is a strategic location passed by public transport users who want to access MRT, Commuter Line, Transjakarta bus, and Skytrain. Thus, this location is considered perfect to show the new face of Jakarta.

"Wide pedestrian area on Jalan Kendal also marks a modern city civilization in Jakarta. Hopefully this mural artwork can be appreciated by all people and become a model for city beautification in several spots in Jakarta," mentioned Danton Sihombing, DKJ Acting Head, as quoted from Jakarta PPID Press Conference, Wednesday (7/24).

PT. MRT Jakarta President Director, William Sabandar supports this activity because its mission is in line with MRT's role as the main operator of transit-oriented area which is also the center of city activities. Besides, this location is also located near Dukuh Atas Park that will be constructed as interaction space with various attractive spots.

"This place can be used as meeting spot and selfie spot thus at the same time, it could encourage people to use public transport more often," he added.

This plan is in accordance with Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan's concept of City 4.0 where Jakarta acts as platform provider and communities as co-creators. Thus government hopes collaboration between mural artists from Berlin and Jakarta can motivate and inspire communities in developing various collaborations which are beneficial for people of both cities/countries.

Formerly, Anies has inaugurated mural paintings on the north side of Jalan Kendal's tunnel on June 21, 2019 using 'New Face of Jakarta' theme. It was done to commemorate Jakarta's 492nd Anniversary. But this time, it will be made on the south side or located on the right side from MRT station.
