Joint Personnel Monitor Fishing Activities in North and South Thousand Islands

As many as 10 joint personnel are monitoring fishing activities in the waters of the North and South Thousand Islands. Those personnel consist of Thousand Islands Maritime, Agriculture and Food Security Sub-agency, Satpol PP, Transportation Sub-agency assisted by army and police.

Fisheries and Maritime Division Head Risnadi disclosed it is conducted every month in order to ensure that fishermen do not use equipment that damages the marine ecosystem.

"We inspect the boat's permits, fishing equipment, business licenses and safety equipment," he expressed, Monday (10/7).

Guidance for Sebira Island Fishermen Intensified

From the monitoring results, personnel still found the use of cantrang (seine nets) and muroami fishing techniques and then were confiscated because of the potential to catch small fish and damage coral reefs.

"So we educate the fishermen about the dangers of the equipments on coral reefs and the survival of fish," he stressed.
