Jakarta Night Market Visitors Decrease to 50 Percent

The holding of Jakarta Night Market in five municipalities has made the amount of visitors coming to the Jakarta Night Market held on every Saturday night on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, Central Jakarta, decreasing to 50 percent.

The visitors and transaction number decrease to 50 percent because the visitors are now spreading to five municipalities

Head of Jakarta Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises and Trade (KUMKMP) Department, Joko Kundaryo, disclosed that before the Jakarta Night Market was held in five municipalities, the people coming to the Jakarta Night Market held on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan could reach up to 20,000 people. But now, there are only about 10,000 visitors coming to the event. Moreover, the transaction number which previously reached Rp 400 million per event, is now only around Rp 200 million per event.

“The visitors and transaction number decrease to 50 percent because the visitors are now spreading to five municipalities, so it (Jakarta Night Market on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan) is not as crowded as before,” he stated, Saturday (11/15).

According to Kundaryo, his department deliberately holds the same event in five locations to increase the economy in the municipalities. However, the event in each municipality is handled by respective KUMKMP sub-department that also determines the location and number of traders participated in the market.

“The implementation is same, held on every Saturday night. Don’t let all concentrate here, thus people would not need to wait for every Saturday night in front of the City Hall,” he said.

As known, Jakarta Night Market is initiated by former Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo. The event was held for the first time last year. As much as 400 traders participated in the event that serves various culinary, souvenirs, and clothes.
