Minister Hanif Appreciates Waste Management Technology at Bantargebang TPST

Environment Minister/Environmental Management Agency, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, appreciated the innovation in waste management at Bantargebang TPST, Bekasi.

According to him, waste management throughout Indonesia, including Jakarta, is a big responsibility that he carries as Minister. He emphasized an open approach to technology and innovation in waste management. He assessed, technological innovation is an important step in addressing the increasingly complex waste problem.

"Each technology needs to be adjusted to the type and purpose of its management. This is done to realize sustainable energy security, and to encourage officials and the public to massively support this effort," he expressed, Wednesday (10/30).

Jakarta Commits to Strengthen Waste Management Synergy

He also highlighted the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration in waste management. Synergy between the government, private sector, communities, and academics was very important in creating a sustainable waste management system.

"This collaboration aims to develop technological innovation and strengthen educational programs that support waste reduction, while increasing public awareness of the importance of responsible waste management," he expressed.

Jakarta Environment Agency Head, Asep Kuswanto explained the Jakarta Provincial Government has implemented an integrated waste management system from upstream to downstream to create sustainable waste management.

At the upstream level, the Environment Agency activates RW-based waste management programs, a circular economy through waste banks, and recycling centers such as the Jakarta Recycle Center.

"In the mid stage, management is conducted through TPS, TPS3R, and processing facilities in the city, including the RDF Plant in Rorotan with 2,500 tons capacity per day," he explained.

Then at the downstream level, the utilization of Waste Power Plant (PLTSa) and RDF Plant technology at Bantargebang TPST is an important step. According to him, PLTSa Merah Putih in Bantargebang has successfully processed around 16,037 tons of waste in 2023, producing 1,106 MWh of electrical energy.

"This is one of the efforts to utilize waste as a renewable energy source in Jakarta," he explained.

Aside that, the RDF Plant of Bantargebang TPST which processes waste with a consistent calorific value according to planning is also a major innovation, thanks to collaboration with PT Indocement Tbk and PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk which utilizes RDF as an alternative fuel.

"This is an important step in creating effective waste management and supporting industry to use environmentally friendly energy," he added.

As for the information, Bantargebang TPST is the only final waste processing site owned by Jakarta Government. Bantargebang TPST has been operating since 1989 and is now almost at its maximum capacity.

Currently, the volume of waste entering the Bantargebang TPST reaches 7,360 tons per day in 2023, with a landfill height exceeding 50 meters.
