Violence Against Women and Children in Jakarta Declines

Jakarta Provincial Government through Empowerment, Child Protection and Population Control (PPAPP) Agency launched the 2024 Regional Women's Life Experience Survey (SPHPD) and the Regional Children's Life Experience Survey (SPHAD) results.

The survey was conducted in collaboration with Jakarta Central Statistics Agency as a strategic step to understand the challenges faced by women and children in Jakarta.

Based on the survey results, the number of violence against women and children show a significant decline. According to SPHPD 2024, 3,78 percent of women in Jakarta experienced physical and/or sexual violence in the past year.

The number is lower compared to last year by 6.72 percent and still exceeds the 2023-2026 RPJMD target of 24.8 percent.

SPHAD 2024 also noted that the number of physical and/or sexual violence against children and teenagers recorded at 13.56 percent. The number is lower compared to last year by 39.64 percent. SPHAD 2024 exceeds the 2023-2026 RPJMD target by 23.56 percent.

Jakarta PPAPP Agency Head, Mochammad Miftahulloh Tamary explained that there is still a lot of homework to minimize or even eliminate violence against women and children even though the number of violence has decreased. Continuing socialization and education to the community through collaboration with Dasawisma, PKK and Dharma Wanita can be one of the efforts.

"Women and children who are victims of violence should have the courage to report it to us. That's the aim of socialization," he explained, Thursday (12/5).

In order to build their courage to report without fear or shame, the agency also provides intensive assistance to victims.

"They consider violence as a disgrace, that's why there still many victims are reluctant to report. We want to convince the victims that reporting the incidents is not something to be ashamed of, but a step to solve the problem both by the government and the community," he added.

Miftah stated that the agency is still commit to give the best services, including posts and assistance, to help the violence victims.

"This is part of Jakarta Provincial Government's major mission to create a safe, inclusive and violence-free environment for women and children in the city," he stated.
