Global City Index Ranking Improvement Accelerated

Jakarta Provincial Government is improving the rank of Jakarta in Global City Index (GCI). Jakarta position is targeted to reach 58th in the next five years and to reach top 20 in 2045.

"Kami sudah melakukan studi secara komprehensif,"

Jakarta Regional Development Planning Board Head, Atika Nir Rahmania, said five dimensions are being measured namely business activity, human resource, cultural experience, information exchanging and political involvement.

Jakarta is currently ranked 74th. Previously, Jakarta's ranking declined from 2015 to 2023, and returned to stable in 2024. The most significant decline occurred in the dimensions of human resources and information exchange.

"We have conducted a comprehensive study with KEARNEY using global city dimensions to identify Jakarta's current position, what the status gaps are and what needs to be improved," said Atika, Monday (4/14).

Jakarta Provincial Government will prepare competitive manpower and focus on improving education quality through PISA score in order to increase the human resource dimension. PISA is used to measure three main studies namely literacy, science and math.

"We'll ensure all schools in Jakarta to be encouraged to improve PISA score," she added.

Second strategy is improving international world engagement by adding institutions of think tank and international headquartered in Jakarta.

"Third is foreign-born population is not only related to its own human capital, but also how Jakarta can attract global talent who want to be in Jakarta," she continued.

The city also learned the success of several cities in China in order to improve GCI. Atika stated that seven of the eight cities that experienced quite rapid increases in GCI were cities in China that prioritized the human resource dimension, as well as large investments in digital infrastructure which were also the keys to success.

"They focus on human capital dimension," she stated.

Meanwhile, of the three other dimensions, Jakarta is assessed has high potential on cultural experience. Atika said the Jakarta 500th anniversary celebration in 2027 to be maximized to improve this sector.

"The cultural diversity and the extraordinary creative economic potential of Jakarta are well-known internationally. Talents of Jakarta are extraordinary," she said.

The creative economy's contribution to Jakarta's Regional Domestic Product (PDR) which reached 50.69 percent and the tourism sector which reached almost five percent, is a strong guide. Jakarta Provincial Government will accelerate the two sectors contribution as the main PDR contribution by encouraging night time economy, facilitating creative economy players, and providing optimal city space.

Atika explained during the meeting, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung also instructed all Regional Working Units to actively contribute in designated programs.

"We must collaborate each other. We will also explore the aspects of fiscal needs to be able to finance the program targets," she stated.
