Jakarta City Council Vice Chairman, Wibi Andrino, revealed that the bylaw regarding ondel-ondel giant effigies is targeted to be completed in time for the celebration of Jakarta's five centuries.
This is part of the five-century history of Jakarta
It is hoped that the Jakarta Government can provide larger spaces for ondel-ondel artists to showcase their best work to the public.
He ensured that this would not be done coinciding with Jakarta's 498th anniversary.
Pramono: Ondel-ondel Should Be Preserved Instead of Misused!"Of course, this is part of the five-century history of Jakarta," he expressed, Thursday (6/19).
According to him, the regulation was designed not to restrict but to provide broader space for ondel-ondel as part of Betawi culture and appear more dignified and professional.
"Do not showcase them (Ondel ondel) in limited spaces, but rather in cultural exhibitions facilitated by the government, which are certainly also supported by policies involving the private sector," he explained.
He also wanted ondel-ondel artists to enhance their skills through training. By so, Betawi culture could present itself more worthy and dignified on national and international stages.
"In the future, they can become cultural ambassadors in ASEAN countries and around the world," he stressed.
He hoped that Jakarta could provide larger spaces for ondel-ondel artists to showcase their best works to the public.
"We want to have cultural alleys or corridors in every corner of the city. Thus, the movement of culture will align with the movement of Jakarta people," he uttered.
