Commission E Announces Trial Scheme for Implementing Free School in 40 Private Schools

Jakarta City Council's Commission E Secretary, Justin Adrian, said free school to be trialed in 40 schools this year. This program is aimed at students who are not accommodated in state schools, by placing them in private schools that have collaborated with the Jakarta Provincial Government.

there are still qualifications for students

"State schools are only accommodate 40 to 60 percent students. The rests must be placed to private schools. Therefore, the involvement of private schools is an alternative solution, especially since the overall number of private and state schools is actually sufficient for the needs of students in Jakarta," he said, Wednesday (7/9).

He explained that the trial scheme would be carried out using a seat quota system in each private school.

"If one private school has 500 seats, then 20 seats must be prepared for this trial. The implemention will not run smoothly at first due to the payment system from Jakarta Provincial Government," he added.

Justin emphasized that this quota scheme is designed not to disrupt the school's financial system.

"The number of seat can be added up if the trial runs smoothly," he continued.

Regarding the legal, Justin stated that currently the implementation of the trial is still referring to the Governor's Decree (Kepgub), while waiting for the revision of the National Education System Law (UU Sisdiknas) which is currently being discussed by the DPR.

"Students who fail the SPMB, especially those with the same grades, will be prioritized based on residence. If the distance from their homes to the school is the same, then age will be considered. Therefore, there are still qualifications for students receiving the free private school program," he explained.
