Legislator Calls on Jakarta Govt to Stay Alert for Tidal Flood

Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a warning about the potential for tidal flooding in several coastal areas of Jakarta until August 9, 2025.

"Water pumps must be prepared to anticipate tidal flooding,"

Areas potentially affected include Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing, Tanjung Priok, Kalibaru, Muara Angke, and Penjaringan.

In response, Commission D Member Bun Joi Phiau urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to enhance preparedness measures, especially by ensuring the availability of flood control equipment such as water pumps.

"Water pumps must be prepared to anticipate tidal flooding in the coming days. We must not be caught off guard, especially in vulnerable areas," he mentioned, Monday (8/4).

He also emphasized the importance of coordination between Water Resources Agency (SDA) and Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in mitigating the impact of tidal flood. According to him, the readiness of physical infrastructure and personnel is crucial for a swift and effective response.

"Both facilities and personnel on the ground must be ready to handle any scenario," he asserted.

He also called on residents in coastal areas to prepare for tidal flooding. Measures that can be taken include placing sandbags and securing valuable belongings.

"Residents must be ready to protect themselves and their surroundings. I advise to install sandbags to block water and secure important belongings for easy evacuation," he expressed.

People were also reminded to be cautious with electrical installations in their homes to prevent short circuits that could lead to fire.

"In flood situations, make sure electrical wiring and installations are not submerged. This is crucial to prevent fires that could worsen the disaster," he said.
