Transjabodetabek Becomes a Finalist for Bloomberg Philanthropies Local Leaders Awards 2025

Jakarta government policies through low-emission and integrated transportation innovations are globally recognized. The cross-regional transportation initiative, Transjabodetabek, successfully reached the final of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Local Leaders Awards 2025.

The prestigious international award winner will be announced on November 4, 2025, at the Local Leaders Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Transjabodetabek became a finalist in the 'Clean, Reliable Transportation: Moving People and Goods on Dependable, Low-Emission Networks' category, competing with several major cities around the world such as Oslo (Norway), São Paulo and Belo Horizonte (Brazil), and Belize City (Belize).

Economics and Finance Assistant, Suharini Eliawati, welcomed this achievement as proof of the world's recognition of Jakarta's commitment to building a sustainable transportation system.

"Through Transjabodetabek, Jakarta not only expands public services to surrounding areas but also demonstrates a strong commitment to integrated, low-emission green mobility. This is part of Jakarta's transformation into a sustainable global city," she expressed, Tuesday (10/14).

The Transjabodetabek program was launched to expand the reach of public transportation services to the Jakarta satellite areas such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi, thereby creating an efficient and environmentally friendly metropolitan connectivity. This initiative is an extension of the Transjakarta system and also supports Jakarta's electrification roadmap.

"Jakarta government keeps committing to ensuring the effective integration of transportation by focusing on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The importance of cross-regional synergy is to ensure that the benefits of Transjabodetabek are felt equally by communities in the metropolitan area," she explained.

Since 2023, 100 electric buses have been operating, with a target of reaching 500 units by 2025 and 100 percent fleet electrification by 2030. Electric buses are also planned to become the backbone of Transjabodetabek services in the future, to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality in the metropolitan area.

"We see the development of the electric bus fleet not just as an innovation in transportation, but as a real step towards a greener and healthier city for all residents. The government will continue to ensure that this transition has a positive impact on the quality of life of the community," she added.

Besides Jakarta, other nominations in the same category include several innovative global initiatives, ranging from the 'Fossil Free Trucks Project' in Oslo promoting emission-free trucks, to the bus fleet electrification program in São Paulo, which now has more than 900 electric buses.

According to Bloomberg Philanthropies, this year's finalists are evaluated based on the impact of innovation on emission reduction, mobility efficiency, and city resilience to climate change.

"Jakarta demonstrates regional leadership in implementing a low-emission transportation system that is not only modern but also inclusive and affordable for its residents," stated an official statement from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Through this international recognition, Jakarta reaffirms its role as a driver of green transportation transformation in Southeast Asia, in line with the vision of creating a livable, resilient, and globally competitive city.
