Council Agrees on Car Free Day Expansion

Jakarta City Council's Commission A Member, Kevin Wu, supported the Jakarta Provincial Government's plan in expanding the Car Free Day implementation in five administration areas. It means the Car Free Day will not only be focused on Sudirman-Thamrin.

Residents can interact, exercise, and show their creativity

According to Kevin, Car Free Day activities have proven to provide numerous benefits to residents. Besides providing a space for social interaction, Car Free Day also provides a means for the community to exercise and foster creativity.

"Residents can interact, exercise, and show their creativity," he said.

He added that the implementation of Car Free Day also has the potential to foster new economic activity within the community. Crowds of people in public spaces, Kevin continued, often create opportunities for small businesses to sell various simple necessities.

Kevin assessed the idea of expanding Car Free Day to five Jakarta regions could be a positive initiative from various perspectives, including sporting, social, and economic aspects. He also encouraged regional Car Free Day implementation to highlight Jakarta's unique cultural characteristics, particularly Betawi culture.

"Ondel-ondel, Tanjidor, Gigi Balang, or Kebaya Encim can be performed there. These activities will strengthen Jakarta's identity as a cultural global city," he stated.

Kevin added that this step is in line with the vision of the Governor and Deputy Governor of Jakarta who want to make Jakarta a cultured global city.

"Car Free Day can be an event that not only brings people together and makes them healthy, but also introduces and brings Betawi culture to life," he emphasized.
