World's Most Populous City, Pramono Denies

Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung stated that Jakarta isn't among the most densely populated cities in the world. According to him, Jakarta's current population density should be ranked among the top 30 in the world.

Jakarta is the most densely populated city, it is wrong

It was said by him in responding to the results of a UN report which named Jakarta as the most densely populated city in the world.

"If it is said that Jakarta is the most densely populated city, it is wrong. Because Jakarta is actually the 30th most densely populated city," he said, Tuesday (12/2).

The difference of opinion between the Jakarta Provincial Government and the United Nations (UN) regarding the population density of Jakarta City is due to differences in calculation methods.

Pramono explained that the UN's 2025 report listed Jakarta as the world's most populous city with 42 million residents. It was based on daily activity data, not official population figures.

"But because the agglomeration is considered Jakarta, its population is 42 million, beating Bangladesh, New Delhi, Tokyo, and so on," he added.

However, the UN report on Jakarta's population density will be used as a reference to continue building and improving Jakarta.

As for information, Jakarta's population is 11,010,514 according to data from the Jakarta Civil Registration Agency. This figure is calculated based on the Population Identification Number (NIK) of residents registered with Jakarta addresses.

Jakarta, as an economic center, also serves as a hub for millions of people from surrounding areas, such as Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, South Tangerang, and Bekasi. They come to Jakarta for work, school, business, medical treatment, and more.

As quoted from the worldpopulationreview.com site, Jakarta's population ranks 28th in the world. Meanwhile, the five most populous cities in the world, respectively, are Tokyo (Japan) with 37 million people, New Delhi (India) with 34 million, Shanghai (China) with 30 million, Dhaka (Bangladesh) with 24 million, and Cairo (Egypt) with 23 million.
