Jakarta Opts for Solemn Prayer to Mark New Year's Eve

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung ensures a low-key New Year’s Eve for 2026, pivoting from lavish celebrations to a solemn prayer gathering in empathy for the ongoing disasters in Sumatra.

It will clearly be a simple event

"We will definitely provide a dedicated space for reflection and prayer, particularly in light of the tragedies in Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra," he expressed, during his visit to North Jakarta, Friday (12/19).

He announced that the New Year's Eve celebration would be modest and understated. He urged Jakartans to exercise restraint in their festivities, out of respect for the communities in Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra currently mourning in the wake of recent disasters.

“I have given this careful thought; the priority is that there will be no excessive or lavish festivities. I simply do not want that,” he explained.

While residents can still mark the turn of the year in other ways, the traditional fireworks display will be cancelled. In its place, Jakarta will feature a drone light show to illuminate the capital's skyline.

“There will be no fireworks on New Year’s Eve. We will use drones instead. After all, as the national capital, Jakarta is in the global spotlight,” he added.

He has instructed his administration to ensure all preparations are handled appropriately. A final decision regarding the celebration details is expected this coming Monday (12/22).

“It will clearly be a simple event, out of respect for our brothers and sisters in Sumatra,” he concluded.
