NCICD Project is Expected to Reduce Flood Impact in Jakarta

The Jakarta Provincial Government officially launched a flood and tidal flood control project through the JakTirta program and the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) Phase A Phase 3 worth Rp 2.62 trillion.

significant impact on flood control

The launch of this strategic project was marked by the signing of a contract with a number of large construction companies on Wednesday (12/24).

Deputy Chairman of Jakarta City Council, Wibi Andrino responded positively related to this effort. According to him, the problem of flooding has long been a source of anxiety for residents every time it rains.

"From the Governor's speech, it is clear that he does not want to be recorded in history, but wants to truly solve the problem," he said.

He assessed that flooding is a complex problem that requires serious and sustainable management. With this strategic project, Wibi hopes the impact of flooding in the capital can be significantly reduced.

"We're not claiming it's 100% complete, as there are bound to be challenges. However, at least the flooding problems can be reduced," he added.

Wibi continued that the Jakarta Provincial Government has been sufficiently prepared and alert in taking anticipatory and mitigation measures, following the early weather warning from the BMKG ahead of the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) celebrations.

Various efforts such as weather engineering, river dredging, and pump and drainage readiness have been carried out in accordance with applicable procedures.

Wibi also emphasized the importance of public socialization to ensure a comprehensive understanding of flood management measures. He added that the Governor's plan to normalize the Ciliwung River is key to the success of Jakarta's flood control program.

"The Ciliwung River normalization is part of a series of big successes and quick wins for the Governor. If completed, it will have a significant impact on flood control in Jakarta," he stated.

Previously, the Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, instructed the acceleration of the auction process so that physical work could begin in early 2026 and is targeted for completion in 2027. The work includes the construction of a polder system, water pumps, reservoirs, and coastal protection embankments spread across five administrative city areas.

This project is expected to improve Jakarta's resilience to flooding and tidal flooding in an integrated, effective, and sustainable manner through more optimal water management.
