Jakarta Braces for Extreme Weather, Boosts City Infrastructure

To combat potential extreme weather threats, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung is putting the city’s flood defenses on high alert, with more than 1,000 pumps stationed across the capital. Speaking at Monas on Monday, he assured that the infrastructure is ready for deployment.

Our capacity is robust, with around 1,200 pumps ready to operate

"Our capacity is robust, with around 1,200 pumps ready to operate," he expressed, Monday (12/29).

He remains confident that the city can clear inundations rapidly, citing recent successes where heavy rainwater receded within two hours.

According to him, the city's proven track record in handling recent downpours serves as the operational blueprint for upcoming weather challenges.

"Yesterday’s heavy downpours receded within 1.5 to 2 hours, and that successful track record will guide our future response,” he remarked.

Pramono confirmed that all agencies are on high alert following extreme weather warnings from BMKG.

According to him, intensive risk mapping for the capital has been conducted in collaboration with BMKG over the last 15 days. To further safeguard the city, Jakarta has also deployed weather modification technology (TMC) several times as a strategic intervention against potential weather-related disasters.

"We've been acting on BMKG’s data for the past 15 days. The Jakarta administration has proactively conducted weather modification several times. This explains why, despite BMKG’s warning of heavy downpours yesterday, we managed to effectively dampen the rainfall,” he stated.
