Jakarta Govt Extends Weather Modification Operations Amid Flood Concerns

The Jakarta Provincial Government, through the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), in cooperation with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Indonesian Air Force, is conducting a Weather Modification Operation (OMC) from January 16 to 22, 2026.

"This effort is aimed at reducing rainfall intensity in vulnerable areas,"

The measure aims to reduce the risk of extreme weather, following forecasts of increased rainfall across the Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek).

BMKG has predicted that rainfall intensity will rise over the coming week until January 22, 2026, with peak rainfall expected between January 18 and 20, 2026.

Jakarta Set for Persistent Rain Through Midday

Jakarta BPBD Head Isnawa Adji said the OMC is a preventive measure to reduce the risk of hydrometeorological disasters, particularly flooding and waterlogging during heavy rainfall.

"Jakarta BPBD has begun the weather modification operation as an anticipatory measure against potential hydrometeorological disasters or extreme weather in Jakarta. This effort is aimed at reducing rainfall intensity in vulnerable areas," he noted on Thursday (1/15).

He mentioned that the operation became more urgent after flooding hit parts of Jakarta on Monday (1/12).

The incident, he added, served as a reminder to strengthen preparedness as weather forecasts warn of prolonged heavy rain.

"The weather modification operation is carried out to reduce disaster risks, while also complementing other measures we have implemented, such as enhancing pump readiness, dredging drainage channels, and deploying personnel on the ground," he explained.

The Jakarta Provincial Government has also urged residents to remain alert to the potential for extreme weather, monitor official updates from BMKG and local authorities, and promptly report emergencies through available complaint channels.

"Through cross-agency collaboration and shared preparedness, the Jakarta Provincial Government hopes the impact of increased rainfall can be minimized, ensuring the safety and daily activities of residents," he said.
