Jakarta Faces Extreme Weather This Week, Residents Urged to Stay Alert

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has issued an early warning for extreme weather across the city from January 21-27, 2026. Efforts are underway to bolster personnel preparedness, infrastructure, and inter-agency coordination in anticipation of extreme weather.

"Cross-agency coordination continues to be strengthened,"

The warning is based on a forecast from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), which indicates the potential for light to heavy rainfall in several areas of the city.

Jakarta BPBD Head Isnawa Adji explained the conditions could trigger hydrometeorological impacts such as waterlogging, flooding, and disruptions to public activities.

Weather Modification Essential to Mitigate Disaster Risks

He noted that the agency has heightened the preparedness of personnel and equipment to anticipate possible impacts of extreme weather.

"Cross-agency coordination continues to be strengthened, including with Water Resources Agency, Bina Marga Agency, and local apparatuses, to ensure flood control systems and emergency response operations run optimally," he said on Wednesday (1/21).

The Jakarta BPBD urged residents to remain alert and vigilant, particularly those living in flood-prone areas.

Isnawa also emphasized the importance of individual mitigation measures, such as preparing umbrellas or raincoats, emergency go-bags, and regularly monitoring weather updates and water level information through official Jakarta Provincial Government channels.

"Active public participation in reporting potential waterlogging or flooding is considered crucial in speeding up on-the-ground response," he stressed.

The Jakarta BPBD has activated the 24-hour Jakarta Siaga 112 emergency service to receive public reports. Residents are encouraged not to hesitate to contact the service if they encounter emergency situations requiring immediate assistance.
