Reclamation Influences Extreme Weather in Seribu Islands

An extreme weather transition that often hit Seribu Islands is allegedly due to reclamation and development without completeness of study of environmental impact analysis (AMDAL).

don't give reclamation permit without clear AMDAL

Head of Seribu Islands Environment Office, Tiurmaida Hutapea said the most impact that easily felt and seen directly is the occurrence of extreme weather.

"There are also rising sea level, changes in sea water temperature and changes in the acidity of sea water," he told, Monday (1/18).

Helmsman Must Notice Weather Change

He explains the island is a coral reef habitat. If it is dredged, it will damage ecosystem and rain water absorption becomes slow. It causes rising sea level.

"The adverse impact is low land area and small islands. Hence don't give reclamation permit without clear AMDAL," he finished.
