The East Jakarta Food Security, Maritime and Agriculture Sub-agency (KPKP) has set its sights on vaccinating 14,000 rabies-transmitting animals throughout 2026.

This initiative is a proactive step to prevent the spread of rabies, which can be transmitted through household pets.
East Jakarta KPKP Sub-agency Head, Taufik Yulianto, stated that the routine annual vaccination service employs a proactive outreach system to reach the community.

"Our aim for 2026 is to vaccinate approximately 14,000 animals. Operations began in early January, as we remain committed to keeping Jakarta rabies-free," he stated, Monday (2/2).
The program includes routine boosters for animals previously vaccinated, as well as first-time doses for younger animals that have recently reached maturity.
"Our personnel simply need to follow the established protocols and schedules," he explained.
Meanwhile, East Jakarta Livestock and Animal Health Head Section, Theresia Ellite added that the vaccination cycle occurs annually, or at a minimum every 10 months. Boosters are typically scheduled for the same month as the previous year's dose.
"We aim for an annual cycle, meaning the booster happens in the same month each year. However, a 10-month window is actually sufficient for a re-vaccination," she clarified.
The trend for animal vaccinations is gaining steam, with officials looking to up the ante by adding 1,000 more animals to their target every year.
According to her, the city’s booming cat population is primarily fueling this surge. Last year, the agency knocked it out of the park, far exceeding its target of 13,112 animals with a final count of 17,938.
"The 2025 tally included 3,002 dogs, 14,819 cats, and dozens of monkeys and civets," Ellita added, highlighting the program’s massive reach.
