Jakarta City Council Chairman, Khoirudin, received the draft bylaw on Food System Management from Jakarta City Secretary, Uus Kuswanto, during a plenary session at the City Council Building, Tuesday (2/3).
Jakarta requires a massive food supply
Khoirudin stated that the deliberation of the Food Regulation is a strategic move to address the challenges of meeting food demands as the population continues to grow.
"Today we held a plenary session for the submission of the draft bylaw on Food. I am pleased to see the executive branch’s swift response. With a population of approximately 10.6 million, Jakarta requires a massive food supply, yet we no longer have rice fields or farmland available," he expressed.
He emphasized that these conditions demand collective readiness and a serious commitment to establishing a sustainable food system. Through the deliberation of this bylaw, the government aims to provide legal certainty, ensuring that food supplies remain sufficient, healthy, and safe for the public.
"With this bylaw in place, we expect to have a solid legal framework that guarantees the provision of adequate, healthy, and safe food for all Jakartans," he continued.
Meanwhile, Jakarta City Secretary, Uus Kuswanto, explained that the submission of the draft Food bylaw is a direct response from the Jakarta government to the various recommendations made by the City Council.
"On behalf of the Jakarta government, this draft bylaw serves as an answer to the City Council's input regarding food security issues. While food subsidies have been in place for several years, there has not been a specific legal umbrella—in the form of a regional regulation—to govern the food system until now," he explained.
He noted that the various public aspirations relayed by council members during their recess periods served as a crucial basis for the urgent need to act upon the draft Food Regulation.
"Hopefully, this valuable input will yield meaningful benefits and enhance the well-being of Jakartans in the years to come," he concluded.
