Dharma Jaya Guarantees Meat Stocks Ahead of Ramadan and Idulfitri

Municipally-owned meat company Perumda Dharma Jaya has guaranteed that beef and poultry stocks remain stable ahead of Ramadan and Idulfitri 1447 H/2026 festivities. They are also beefing up its inventory with additional imported cattle to brace for a projected spike in demand.

500 to 600 cattle from Australia will arrive by late February

Perumda Dharma Jaya President Director, Raditya Endra Budiman reported that current beef stocks stand at 1,246 tons, while poultry supplies reach 435 tons. Further, 1,594 head of live cattle are ready for slaughter to meet market needs.

"Insya Allah (God willing), another 500 to 600 cattle from Australia will arrive by late February. If necessary, we also have a reserve of around 1,000 head to help steady prices and curb market volatility,” he said, during a "Balkoters Talk" discussion titled ‘Readiness of Three Food BUMDs Ahead of Ramadan and Idulfitri 2026’ at Jakarta City Hall, Thursday (2/12).

Ahead of Ramadan, Foodstuffs Supervision in East Jakarta Tightened

He explained that Jakarta has a massive appetite for meat. On an annual basis, beef demand clocks in at approximately 73,100 tons, while poultry needs reach 182,230 tons. In terms of per capita consumption, Jakartans consume between 2.3 and 5 kilograms of beef and about 11 kilograms of chicken every year.

According to him, demand ramps up significantly during Ramadan, driven primarily by the hospitality and food service sectors.

“The lion’s share of consumption comes from the HOREKA (Hotel, Restaurant, and Cafe) sector. Restaurants are almost always booked solid during iftar (breaking-of-the-fast) hours. Hence, we have factored in this high demand into our inventory planning to ensure we aren't caught short,” he explained.

As a municipally-owned enterprise (BUMD), Dharma Jaya’s mission goes beyond the bottom line; the company is equally committed to keeping prices in check for the public. Its premium beef hindquarters are priced at approximately Rp 135,000 per kilogram, effectively undercutting market rates which typically hover between Rp 139,500 and Rp 140,000.

“Prices for certain other cuts are even more competitive. We are determined to ensure that Jakarta people get the best bang for their buck,” he furthered.

To further shore up supply stability, Dharma Jaya is beefing up its storage infrastructure. The company currently operates an 800-ton cold storage facility in Cakung, East Jakarta.

Looking ahead, the company is set to scale up its capacity significantly, with a new 5,000-ton cold storage warehouse already in the pipeline. He noted that managing supply and prices involves working hand in hand with relevant government agencies, importers, and other industry players.

“Under the agencies, we are maintaining close coordination to ensure a steady flow of goods and keep a lid on price hikes. We're fully prepared to stand our ground in maintaining food stability across Jakarta,” he concluded.

Jakarta KPKP Agency Head, Hasudungan A. Sidabalok added, the Jakarta government oversees nine slaughterhouses and is priming its warehouse and cold storage network to ensure an airtight supply chain.

He emphasized that bolstering animal protein supplies is key to stemming the tide of price volatility while ensuring constant availability. Thus far, beef, chicken, and egg prices have remained on an even keel thanks to the coordinated oversight of both central and local authorities.

Beyond regular inventory management, Dharma Jaya is playing a pivotal role in the subsidized "Cheap Food" initiative. Through this scheme, residents can snap up commodities such as beef and poultry at rock-bottom prices well below the market average.

"This intervention serves as a vital safety net to protect the public’s pocketbook,” he concluded on a firm note.
