Clearing the Way: Satpol PP Targets 18 Sidewalk Locations

The Jakarta Satpol PP is preparing to clear the way at 18 sidewalk locations across the city's five administrative regions in the coming days.

The crackdown is already in full swing

The operation is designed to head off unauthorized sidewalk encroachment by vendors looking to capitalize on the Ramadan rush, a trend that frequently disrupts public order and pedestrian access.

Satpol PP Chief Satriadi Gunawan confirmed he has received his marching orders from Vice Governor Rano Karno to address the issue. The directive emphasizes standing one's ground on public order while maintaining a human-centric approach.

"Per Mr. Karno’s instructions, while we want Ramadan to benefit the community, we must ensure that takjil (fast-breaking snack) sellers are kept in check. We'll organize them to ensure they don't overstay their welcome or block public paths," he noted, Thursday (2/19)

Satriadi clarified that it is to keep things in check rather than a total ban, ensuring sidewalks serve their rightful purpose. This seasonal push aims to prevent a month-long disruption that could otherwise clog the city’s arteries.

He warned that without proper oversight, the situation could easily spiral out of control, causing pedestrian discomfort and traffic snarls.

He is casting a wider net, as the operation is not limited to sidewalk stalls. Personnel on the ground are also clamping down on vendors encroaching on the streets.

“The crackdown is already in full swing, and we are also taking aim at illegal parking,” he concluded.
