Jakarta Inaugurates Inclusive Sarinah Pedestrian Bridge

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has officially inaugurated the revitalized Sarinah pedestrian bridge (JPO), which is now seamlessly integrated with the MH Thamrin Transjakarta bus station in Central Jakarta.

This provides pedestrians with multiple crossing options

In his opening remarks, the Governor underscored the bridge's profound historical significance for the residents of the capital.

"This structure was Jakarta’s very first pedestrian bridge. It was originally inaugurated by [former Governor] Ali Sadikin on April 21, 1968. It is truly steeped in history," he expressed.

The revitalization champions an inclusivity-first approach, featuring dedicated facilities for people with disabilities, such as elevators. Additionally, the Jakarta government offers an at-grade alternative for the public via a pelican crossing.

"This provides pedestrians with multiple crossing options. Those with special needs or disabilities, however, can fully utilize the bridge's elevators and other accessibility features," he remarked

Pramono noted that the pedestrian walkways surrounding the bridge will be widened to 2.6 meters to allow for greater mobility and a more comfortable walking experience. With the revamped bridge, he aims to provide various access points that will streamline visits to the historic Sarinah shopping center.

Further, he is opening up opportunities for the private sector to acquire naming rights for the pedestrian bridge.

"Selling naming rights will undoubtedly provide an additional revenue stream for the Jakarta government. Hence, if there are parties—whether it be Sarinah or private entities—interested in securing naming rights for this bridge, we open the door for such partnerships," he explained.

Transjakarta President Director, Welfizon Utama added, the revitalization of the Sarinah JPO marks the initial phase of a broader rollout, with sidewalk expansion set to follow in the subsequent stage.

"This is Phase 1. The final iteration will be completed following the pedestrian reinstatement by MRT, which is slated for May. At that time, the sidewalks will be widened by approximately 2.6 meters," Pramono clarified.

He further noted that the bridge was financed through Transjakarta’s corporate budget as part of a broader station revamp package.

Notably, the Sarinah JPO project is a key component of Jakarta’s ongoing pedestrian facility restructuring. The structure spans 39.78 meters in length and measures 2.1 meters in width.
